mabe | REFRIGERATOR REDESIGN
Starlight
University Internship · Team Project

During an internship with Mabe, my team and I redesigned a Bottom Freezer refrigerator to create a more versatile, ergonomic, and user-centered experience. We focused on improving storage organization, door shelves, and practical accessories that make everyday use easier.

THE CHALLENGE
The challenge was to rethink the full refrigerator experience, not just the appearance. We explored how the exterior, dispenser area, shelves, door storage, accessories, and freezer could work together to make the product feel more practical, organized, and easy to use.

RESEARCH FINDINGS
Through interviews, observation, and benchmarking, we found that users needed a refrigerator that was easier to organize, easier to clean, and more flexible for everyday storage.
Difficult shelf removal
Shelves are too hard to take out for cleaning, and have small spaces that can't be fully reached

Limited space for tall containers and jars
Users struggle to fit large bottles and tall items

Need for better door storage and accessories
Current door shelves lack flexibility for different items

DESIGN RESPONSE
Based on the research findings, we identified these opportunities to improve:

Easy cleaning
Removable shelves and accessories that are easier to take out and rearrange

Flexible storage
Adjustable spaces for tall jars, bottles, pitchers, and food containers

Organized freezer
Clearer compartments for frozen food, ice, and everyday storage
Beverage area
A dedicated space for drinks, including water and other beverages
FINAL CONCEPT
The final concept combines a modern exterior with a more organized interior. The design improves beverage access, shelf flexibility, freezer storage, and visibility through a translucent glass door, creating a refrigerator that feels cleaner, easier to use, and better adapted to everyday needs.
